Beauty acts as a mask that hides Everest's true character with Innocence

The first factor of the deceiver archetype is offering something of desire. Since Jon had always had a burning desire to climb Mount Everest and discover its beautiful sights, and finally gets the chance to in 1996, this corresponds to Jon receiving what he desires from the deceiver. Jon is lured in by the mountains beauty and is distracted away from the dangers of the mountain. An example of this is when Jon describes the Khumba Icefall, which is the most dangerous part of the mountain, which he describes saying "As dawn washed the darkness from the sky, the shattered glacier was revealed to be a three-dimensional landscape of phantasmal beauty" (Krakauer 189). This shows Everest covering its dangers with its beauty.
