Introduction to the Novel

Into Thin Air is a true story by Jon Krakauer, which follows his experience of climbing Everest and the horrors he witnessed in the 1996 Everest disasterOutside magazine sends Jon to climb Everest and write about his experience. This ignites the flame of a long-forgotten dream that He had, had when he was nine years old. His journey to the summit involves many challenging and dangerous obstacles, but the real danger occurs after Jon spots a huge wisp of clouds coming towards Everest. Great tragedy follows in the events after this.

The Deceiver

"The Deceiver" refers to the archetypal character that Mount Everest represents. Although Everest is not and actual living character, an archetype can still be applied. The deceiver is one who seems innocent at first, offering something of desire. What they offer is soon exchanged with death and horrible fate. Everest follows the path of the deceiver which Jon shows throughout his novel.
